One Disease at a Time

About Us

One Disease at a Time is an Australian awareness initiative focused on gambling addiction — one of the most significant yet under-discussed public health challenges facing our nation.

Our Mission

We exist to reduce the harm caused by gambling addiction in Australia. Through education, community engagement, and connecting people to support services, we aim to empower individuals, families, and communities to break free from the cycle of problem gambling.

Australia holds the unfortunate distinction of having the highest gambling losses per capita in the world. With nearly 200,000 poker machines — more per person than almost any other country — and increasingly aggressive sports betting advertising, the problem continues to grow. We believe this can change.

Our Approach

Education

We provide clear, evidence-based information to help Australians understand the risks of gambling, recognise warning signs, and know where to turn for help.

Community

We foster supportive communities where people can share experiences without stigma, and work with local organisations to implement prevention programs.

Action

We connect individuals with professional counselling, self-exclusion tools, financial support services, and ongoing recovery programs across every state and territory.

The Scale of the Problem

Australians lose more than $25 billion to gambling every year. That's more per person than any other country in the world. The impacts go far beyond financial:

  • Mental health: Problem gamblers are 6 times more likely to experience depression
  • Relationships: Gambling is cited in 1 in 10 family court matters
  • Employment: Job loss and reduced productivity affect the wider economy
  • Housing: Gambling-related financial stress is a leading cause of homelessness
  • Youth: Young men aged 18-34 are the fastest-growing group of problem gamblers

What We Stand For

We approach gambling addiction as a health issue, never a moral failing.
